About Us

The Volunteer Attorney Program (“VAP”) of Colorado Legal Services (CLS) Durango office connects low-income individuals needing legal help with civil matters with volunteer attorneys practicing in southwest Colorado.  All clients must apply at CLS to determine whether the legal issue is one that CLS assists with, and whether the applicant is financially eligible.

If a CLS client is referred to a private attorney through VAP, the attorney donates their time and expertise, free of charge.  Services provided range from advice, brief services, and representation. The level of service provided depends on the individual case and availability of volunteers.

CLS also teaches individuals about their legal rights at monthly presentations which are free and open to the public. Click on our Events tab above for more information about our presentations.

If you apply for help from CLS, you’ll be considered for a referral through VAP. Apply online here or by calling the CLS Durango office at 970-247-0266.

What legal issue might VAP be able to help with if I qualify?

  • Debt collection, bankruptcy, consumer protection (consumer law)
  • Discrimination, wage claim, and other employee rights issues (employment law)
  • Simple wills, advanced medical directives, powers of attorney (estate planning)

  • Domestic violence issues, dissolutions (divorces), child custody (family law)
